Cold Plunge Chiller Sizing Calculator
Cold Plunge Chiller Sizing Calculator
Enter your tub volume, target temperature, and setup, and this tool estimates the chiller size you need in horsepower and BTU, plus a rough cooldown time. It takes the guesswork out of matching a chiller to your cold plunge.
Most home cold plunges hold 80 to 150 gallons. If unsure, a single-person tub is usually around 100 gallons.
Recommended chiller
Estimates only. Compressor efficiency varies by design, so compare BTU ratings, not just horsepower, when shopping. Cooldown times assume a starting water temperature near 75 to 80°F.
How chiller sizing works
A cold plunge chiller is sized to the volume of water it has to cool and how cold you want it. The more gallons, the lower the target temperature, and the warmer your environment, the more cooling power you need. Power is measured in horsepower and in BTU, the actual heat the unit can remove. As a rule of thumb, small tubs of 50 to 100 gallons pair with a 1/3 horsepower chiller near 3,000 BTU, medium tubs of 100 to 200 gallons need 1/2 to 1 horsepower near 6,000 BTU, and large tubs over 200 gallons call for 1 horsepower or more near 12,000 BTU. Hot climates and tubs in direct sun should size up, because the chiller fights ambient heat all day. This calculator applies those rules to your inputs so you get a starting recommendation, not a guess. Confirm final sizing with the chiller manufacturer for your exact tub.
Chiller size by tub volume
| Tub volume | Typical chiller | Approx. BTU | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 to 100 gallons | 1/3 HP | ~3,000 | Personal indoor plunge |
| 100 to 200 gallons | 1/2 to 1 HP | ~6,000 | Most home setups |
| 200 to 300 gallons | 1 HP | ~12,000 | Large or hot-climate |
| 300 gallons plus | 1.5 to 2.5 HP | 15,000 plus | Commercial or extreme cold |

Frequently asked questions
What size chiller do I need for a cold plunge?
For most home tubs of 100 to 200 gallons, a 1/2 to 1 horsepower chiller near 6,000 BTU keeps water in the high 30s to mid 40s. Smaller tubs can use 1/3 horsepower, and larger or hot-climate setups need 1 horsepower or more. Size up if the tub sits in direct sun.
Does a bigger chiller cool faster?
Yes. A higher horsepower and BTU chiller pulls heat out faster, so it reaches your target temperature sooner and recovers quicker between plunges. In hot climates a larger unit also holds temperature better against ambient heat.
Should I compare horsepower or BTU?
Compare BTU. Horsepower is a rough label, but BTU measures the actual heat the chiller removes, and efficiency varies by compressor design. Two units with the same horsepower can have different real-world cooling power.
