Sauna Size Calculator: What Size Sauna Do I Need?

Pick how many people will use the sauna and how you like to sit. The calculator estimates the interior square footage, a sensible footprint, and how many people the space comfortably holds, so you can match a room or a cabin before you buy.

How many people will usually use it at once?

How do you want to sit?

Lying down needs a bench at least 6 feet long, so one wall has to be longer.

Traditional saunas need extra clearance around a hot heater, so they run a little larger.

The short answer on sauna sizing

For a home sauna, plan on roughly 6 to 9 square feet of interior floor space per person seated upright, and closer to 12 square feet per person if anyone wants to lie down. A one to two person infrared sauna usually fits in about a 4 by 4 foot footprint, a three to four person sauna lands near 5 by 6 feet, and larger cabins for five or six people run 6 by 8 feet or more. Traditional saunas with a heater need a little extra room for safe clearance. Ceiling height of 6 feet 6 inches to 7 feet keeps the heat where your body is. Use the calculator above to turn your group size and seating style into a target footprint, then match it to a room or an outdoor spot.

How this calculator works

The tool starts from the floor area top sauna sellers and builders use per person, then adjusts for two things that change the number: whether you want to lie down, and whether the sauna uses a heater. Lying down forces a longer bench, so the recommended footprint grows along one wall. A traditional heater needs guarded clearance, so the tool adds a small buffer that an infrared cabin does not require. The outputs are planning estimates to help you shortlist sizes. Always confirm the exact exterior dimensions and required clearances on the product you choose, since door swing, bench depth, and heater guards vary by model.

Typical sauna sizes by capacity

3 to 4 people	About 25 to 42 sq ft	5x6 to 6x7 ft	Families, room to recline
5 to 6 people	About 42 to 60 sq ft	6x8 ft and up	Entertaining, outdoor cabins

Sauna sizing questions

How much space do I need for a 2 person sauna?

Most 2 person infrared saunas fit in a footprint around 4 by 4 to 4 by 6 feet and need about 16 to 25 square feet of floor space, plus room for the door to open and a few inches of air gap behind the cabin.

What ceiling height does a sauna need?

A ceiling of 6 feet 6 inches to 7 feet is standard. Lower ceilings keep heat near the body and are more efficient, while very tall ceilings waste heat and take longer to warm up.

Can a sauna go in a small room or apartment?

Yes. One and two person infrared saunas are built for tight spaces and plug into a standard outlet in many cases. Measure the floor, the door swing, and the path to move the cabin in before you buy.

What size sauna is appropriate for 4 people?

For four adults, plan on about 25 to 42 square feet of interior floor, roughly a 5 by 6 to 6 by 7 foot cabin. Person ratings run optimistic, so a sauna sold as a 4-person often seats three comfortably. If everyone wants room to stretch out, size up one class.

For a family or a group that sits together, these 4-person saunas are in our sauna collection: the Monaco 4-Person Outdoor Infrared Sauna from $5,899.97, the Kairo 4-Person Outdoor Infrared Sauna at $6,999.97 and the Barcelona 4-Person Cedar Barrel Sauna at $7,399.97. Check the interior dimensions on each product page against your space. If you are choosing a heat type first, our Which Sauna quiz can help.

Frequently asked questions

What size sauna do I need for 2 people?

For two adults seated, plan on about a 4 ft by 6 ft interior, which gives each person roughly 24 inches of bench width plus room for the heater and door. If you want one person to lie down, keep a bench at least 72 inches long, which the same 4 ft by 6 ft footprint usually allows.

How much space do I need for a home sauna?

A solo sauna fits in as little as 3 ft by 3 ft, while a 4-person model wants about 5 ft by 7 ft. Add a few inches of clearance around the cabinet for airflow and the door swing, and confirm interior ceiling height of 6.5 to 7 ft. Always check the exact dimensions of the model you are considering.

Are sauna person ratings accurate?

They run optimistic. Manufacturer person ratings usually assume 18 to 20 inches of bench width per person, which is tight for adults who want personal space. A sauna sold as a 4-person often seats three comfortably, so size up one class if roominess matters to you.
