Using Your HSA/FSA for a Sauna or Cold Plunge

Pay with Pre-Tax HSA/FSA Funds

Many saunas and cold plunge tubs can be purchased with pre-tax HSA (Health Savings Account) or FSA (Flexible Spending Account) dollars when they’re used for a qualifying health purpose. Because those funds are pre-tax, eligible buyers can effectively save a meaningful share of the purchase price.

How it usually works

  1. Talk to your doctor. For wellness equipment like saunas and cold plunges, plans typically ask for a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN), a short note from a licensed provider stating the equipment supports treatment of a specific condition.
  2. Keep your documentation. Save the LMN and your receipt in case your plan administrator requests it.
  3. Pay and get reimbursed. Depending on your plan, you either pay with your HSA/FSA card directly or pay normally and submit for reimbursement.

What to confirm with your plan

Eligibility and documentation rules vary by plan and administrator, so confirm the specifics with yours before you buy. We’re happy to provide an itemized receipt and product details to support your claim, just reach out.
