How much ice does a cold plunge need, and what does it cost?
A 100 gallon tub at 60 F needs roughly 52 pounds of ice to reach 50 F, which is three standard 20 pound bags. At $3 a bag that is $9 per session, about $156 a month at four sessions a week, and close to $1,870 a year. Push the target to 45 F or start from 70 F tap water in summer and the figure climbs fast, because every extra degree of drop adds about five pounds on a tub that size. A chiller on the same tub uses around 60 kWh a month, roughly $11 at the national average electricity rate. How the ice math works
Water weighs 8.34 pounds per gallon and gives up 1 BTU per pound for every degree F it drops. Ice absorbs 143.4 BTU per pound as it melts, plus a little more as the melt water warms to your target. The calculator balances those two sides, so a colder target costs you twice: more heat to remove, and slightly less absorption per pound of ice. It then rounds up to whole bags, since nobody sells you 2.6 of them.
The chiller side is simpler. Watts divided by 1,000, times hours of runtime, times 30.4 days, times your electricity rate. Who should stay on ice and who should buy a chiller
Stay on ice if you plunge once or twice a week, if you are still deciding whether cold exposure suits you, if you plunge outdoors in a cold climate where winter does the work for free, or if you travel and want a tub you can drain and store. A season on bags is a cheap way to find out whether the habit sticks before spending on equipment.
Buy a chiller if you plunge three or more times a week, if you want a consistent temperature instead of a guess, if summer tap water is above 70 F where you live, or if the ice run is the reason you skip sessions. Is a chiller cheaper than buying ice?

Does a cold plunge use a lot of electricity?
Less than most people expect. A residential chiller on an insulated, covered tub typically draws 40 to 90 kWh a month, which sits in the same range as a second refrigerator. An uninsulated tub in direct sun can double that, so a fitted cover is the cheapest efficiency upgrade you can make.
