ADA Sauna Requirements: Accessible Sizes, Doors, and Benches
If you are putting a sauna in a gym, spa, clinic, studio, hotel, or apartment amenity room, the federal accessibility standards apply to it. If you are putting one in your own house, they do not, but the same dimensions are the clearest blueprint anyone has published for a sauna a wheelchair user can actually get into and use. This guide covers both cases, with the exact numbers from the U.S. Access Board, so you can check a floor plan or a manufacturer spec sheet before you buy rather than after the crate arrives.
The short answer: what an ADA compliant sauna requires
Under Section 241 of the 2010 ADA Standards for Accessible Design, saunas and steam rooms in places of public accommodation must comply with Section 612. Four things drive the design. The door needs a clear opening width of at least 32 inches, with a threshold no higher than half an inch. The room needs wheelchair turning space, either a 60 inch diameter circle or a T shaped space. If seating is provided, at least one bench must be fixed or built in, 42 inches long minimum, 20 to 24 inches deep, and 17 to 19 inches high, with unobstructed clear floor space of 30 by 48 inches at the end of that bench. The door cannot swing into that clear floor space. Controls have to sit within reach range and work with one hand. Where two or more saunas are clustered together, at least 5 percent, and never fewer than one of each type, must comply.
Does the ADA apply to a home sauna?
No. Title III of the ADA covers places of public accommodation and commercial facilities. The Department of Justice technical assistance manual is direct about residences: where a place of public accommodation sits inside a private home, only the portion used for the business is covered, and the part used exclusively as a residence is not. A sauna in your basement or backyard, used by you and your guests, falls outside the law entirely.
That distinction matters in two directions. It means no inspector is going to cite you for a 24 inch home sauna door. It also means a manufacturer calling a residential cabin "ADA compliant" is making a marketing claim, not a regulated one, so read the spec sheet instead of the badge. Ask for the actual clear opening width of the door, the actual bench height, and the actual interior floor dimensions.
Where the standards earn their keep at home is as a design target. If someone in your household uses a wheelchair, walker, or transfer bench, or you expect to age in the house, building to the Section 612 numbers is the difference between a sauna that stays usable for twenty years and one that becomes decorative. That is a buying decision worth making once, at the front, because a sauna cabin is not something you widen later.

Two of these trip up more projects than the rest. The first is the door swing: it cannot intrude on the 30 by 48 inch clear floor space at the accessible bench, which on a small cabin usually forces an outswing door. The second is the bench. Readily removable benches are allowed to sit in the turning space and in the bench clear floor space, and the Access Board notes that placing them outside those spaces is the better practice, but the one accessible bench itself has to be fixed or built in. A stack of loose slat benches does not satisfy the requirement no matter how sturdy it feels.
What size sauna do you actually need to hit these numbers?
A 60 inch turning circle plus a fixed 42 inch bench and its 30 by 48 inch approach space is not something a two person cabin can absorb. In practice, a room that meets Section 612 with a fixed perimeter bench generally starts around 7 by 7 feet of interior floor, and laying the turning circle over a corner bench arrangement often pushes it closer to 7 by 8. If the design uses a T shaped turning space instead of the full circle, you can sometimes work inside a tighter footprint, but that is a decision for whoever stamps the drawings.
For a commercial room, that footprint usually points to a cut to fit sauna room rather than a prefabricated cabin, which is where most of our traditional sauna configurations live. For a home build where the ADA does not apply but usability does, a larger prefabricated cabin gets you most of the way: more floor for a transfer, a lower bench height, and a door you can order oversized. One honest caveat on infrared specifically. Infrared cabins heat by radiant panels close to the body, so bench position relative to the panels changes the experience more than it does in a hot rock room. If you are lowering a bench or moving a user toward the center of the floor for clearance, confirm panel placement with the manufacturer so the session still delivers heat where the user is sitting.
Who this matters for, and who can skip it
This matters if you are specifying a sauna for a gym, boutique studio, medical or physical therapy practice, hotel, country club, municipal rec center, or a multifamily amenity room that is open beyond residents and their guests. You can skip it if the sauna is private, residential, and nobody in the household has a mobility need you are designing around. Pulling ADA dimensions into a private backyard build adds real footprint and real cost for a legal obligation that does not exist. Buying an accessible sauna: the practical steps
- Get a dimensioned drawing before you order. Ask for interior clear floor dimensions with benches in place, door clear opening width, and finished bench height. Brochure footprints are usually exterior dimensions and overstate the room you get.
- Decide door swing early. An outswing door is the usual fix for the bench clear floor space, and it changes where the sauna can sit in the room.
- Specify the fixed bench. Confirm in writing that the accessible bench is built in and load rated, and that its height lands in the 17 to 19 inch band after the flooring goes down.
- Check the control panel height. Many stock panels mount higher than reach range allows. Ask whether the panel can be relocated or whether a remote or app control is available.
- Plan the threshold and the approach. Prefabricated floor pans often create a lip above half an inch, which means a compliant ramp and landing, and the landing has to be level enough for door maneuvering clearance.
- Confirm the installer. Accessibility details get lost between manufacturer and installer. Put the dimensions in the purchase order.

What is the minimum door width for an ADA sauna?
32 inches of clear opening width, measured with the door open. There is no exception for saunas or steam rooms. That is clear width, not the width of the door slab or the rough opening, so a 32 inch door slab usually does not get you there once the stop and the open leaf are accounted for.
Does a home sauna need to meet ADA standards?
No. Title III of the ADA applies to places of public accommodation, and the portion of a private residence used exclusively as a residence is not covered.
