The short answer on red light therapy dosage
Red light therapy dose is energy per area, measured in joules per square centimeter (J/cm squared). You control it with two things: how strong the light is at your skin (irradiance, in mW/cm squared) and how long you sit under it (time). The formula is simple: dose equals irradiance times seconds divided by 1,000. Most skin and anti-aging goals land near 5 J/cm squared, general wellness near 8, and muscle or joint work near 15 to 20. So a panel putting out 100 mW/cm squared at your treatment distance reaches 8 J/cm squared in about 80 seconds per area. More is not automatically better, because the response is biphasic, meaning past the sweet spot the benefit falls off. Use the calculator above to turn your device number into a target time, then hold that distance each session.
How the calculator works
Enter the irradiance your manufacturer lists for a set distance, pick the goal that matches what you want, and the tool solves for time. It divides your target dose by your irradiance, then converts to a minutes and seconds session length for one treated area. If you treat several areas, apply that time to each. The reference doses below reflect ranges commonly reported for skin and musculoskeletal goals, and they are estimates, not medical prescriptions.
| Goal | Target dose | Time at 100 mW/cm squared |
|---|---|---|
| Skin and anti-aging | About 5 J/cm squared | About 50 seconds |
| General wellness and recovery | About 8 J/cm squared | About 80 seconds |
| Muscle and joint recovery | About 15 J/cm squared | About 2 minutes 30 seconds |
| Deeper tissue support | About 20 J/cm squared | About 3 minutes 20 seconds |
Why not just go longer? Photobiomodulation follows a biphasic dose response: too little does nothing, an optimal amount helps, and too much can cancel the benefit. The science is summarized in this NIH review of the biphasic dose response in low level light therapy. Red light therapy is generally low risk, but if you are pregnant, take photosensitizing medication, or have a medical condition, ask your clinician before starting.
Irradiance is the number that changes everything
Two panels can look identical yet deliver very different doses, because irradiance drops quickly as you move away from the light. A panel rated 100 mW/cm squared at 6 inches might be half that at 12 inches, which doubles the time you need. Always use the distance your manufacturer measured, keep it consistent, and re-run the calculator if you change how far you sit. Frequently asked questions
What is a good red light therapy dose?
For skin and anti-aging, many protocols aim for roughly 3 to 10 J/cm squared, with a median near 8 J/cm squared across studies. Muscle and joint goals often use higher doses, around 15 to 20 J/cm squared. Start conservative and stay consistent rather than chasing the highest number.
How long should a red light therapy session be?
It depends on your device. At 100 mW/cm squared, about 80 seconds per area reaches 8 J/cm squared. A weaker 50 mW/cm squared device needs roughly double the time for the same dose. Enter your own irradiance above to get a specific time.
Can you overdo red light therapy?
Yes, in the sense that going well past the optimal dose can reduce the benefit rather than add to it, a pattern researchers call the biphasic dose response. Longer is not always better. If you have a health condition or take photosensitizing medication, check with your clinician first.
