How to choose a HUUM heater

HUUM is an Estonian heater brand known for open, stone-filled designs. We carry two electric heaters, the wall-mounted Drop with the UKU controller and the Core in a Thermo-Aspen surround (6.5 to 10.5 kW, steel or black), and several Hive wood-burning stoves, including Hive Flow Mini (8.5 kW), Hive Flow (9.8 kW) and Hive Wood (17 kW), some with a firebox extension (LS) for feeding wood from outside the hot room.

1. Electric or wood

Electric heaters suit indoor and plug-in-ready outdoor rooms and heat on demand from a controller. Wood stoves suit off-grid and cabin saunas and need a chimney and clearances. Read electric vs wood-burning sauna.

2. Size the kW to the room

Heater output must match the room volume, with extra for glass and uninsulated walls. Use our sauna heater calculator or read what size sauna heater do I need.

3. Installation

  • Electric heaters need a licensed electrician and the circuit stated in the manual.
  • Wood stoves need a code-compliant chimney, floor protection and clearances. See our heater clearance guide.
  • LS versions need a wall opening for the firebox extension.

HUUM FAQ

What size HUUM Drop do I need?

The HUUM Drop comes in 4.5, 6, 7.5 and 9 kW versions, rated for rooms up to about 247, 353, 424 and 530 cubic feet. Measure your room volume and allow extra capacity for glass or cold walls. It runs on 240V and ships with the UKU digital controller.

What is the HUUM Core?

The Core is a HUUM electric heater set in a Thermo-Aspen wood surround. Our listing offers it in steel or black at 6.5, 9 or 10.5 kW. Size it to your room volume and have a licensed electrician wire it to the circuit in HUUM's manual.

How do the HUUM wood stoves differ?

They are HUUM's wood-burning stoves in three sizes: Hive Flow Mini at 8.5 kW, Hive Flow at 9.8 kW and Hive Wood at 17 kW, per our listings. LS versions add a firebox extension, so you can feed the stove through the wall from an adjoining room.

Why do HUUM heaters hold so many stones?

HUUM heaters surround the heating element or firebox with a large mass of stones. That mass stores heat and gives softer, more even steam when you pour water. The Drop holds about 122 lb of stones. Stones are included where the listing title says so.

Who should install a HUUM heater?

A licensed electrician should wire the Drop and its UKU controller to a dedicated 240V circuit. Wood stoves need an insulated solid-fuel chimney and the clearances in HUUM's manual, checked by a qualified installer. Both types also need the floor, wall and ceiling clearances listed in the manual.
