How a sauna tent works

The tent walls are insulated, quilted and made with fire-resistant material, with a window panel and reinforced tie-downs. A stainless steel stove sits inside with a chimney through the roof, and Finnish rocks in the rock basket hold the heat. All Day Sauna Co. says the tent goes from 0 to 190°F in about 20 minutes. Ladling water on the rocks adds steam. Because heat comes from a wood fire rather than a plug, the tent works at a cabin, a campsite-style yard or a second home with no power at all.

It is a different experience from a built cabin. Heat is soft and wraps the whole tent, and you can pack it away at the end of the season. If you are still deciding between wood and electric heat, our guide to electric or wood-burning saunas compares the two. Space and setup

Plan for a level site. The manufacturer's diagram shows a 10 ft setup area and a tent about 7.5 ft wide. Secure the tent with the tie-downs and sand bags, and place the fire safety mat under the stove. The packages are designed so one person can set the tent up, break it down and move it, and the Deluxe page says it breaks down into pieces under 50 lb each. Keep it clear of overhanging branches, fences and anything that burns, and follow the manufacturer's stove clearances.

Rules differ by town and HOA, so check local fire and burn rules before you light it. Our guides on outdoor sauna permits and outdoor sauna clearance explain what to look for.

What the stove needs

Wood is the fuel, so you will load and tend the fire. Never leave a lit stove unattended, and wear heat-safe gloves when you load wood or touch hot surfaces. The All Day Sauna Co. leather sauna stove gloves are $60 and made for that job. Our guide to the best wood for a sauna and how to maintain a wood-burning sauna cover fuel and upkeep. Accessories worth adding

The Outdoor package gives you the tent and stove, so most buyers add seating and a few essentials. Flooring, stools, chairs and other accessories shown in some photos are sold separately.

Compare that list with what the Deluxe package already includes before you buy accessories one by one, since the $400 difference may cover most of it.

Who a sauna tent suits, and who should buy a cabin

A tent suits you if you want a real heated sauna without wiring, you have a flat open spot, and you are happy to light a fire. It also suits renters, second homes and seasonal use because it packs away. If you want all-weather permanence, an enclosed bench layout or electric controls, look at our outdoor saunas or portable saunas instead.

Sauna use is for general relaxation and wellness. It is not a treatment for any medical condition, and if you are pregnant or have a heart condition or low blood pressure, talk with your doctor first.
