What is the smallest size wood stove available?
Share
The smallest wood stove for a sauna depends on whether you mean smallest in size or smallest in output. Of the stoves we sell, the wood-burning sauna stoves with the lowest output start at 8.5 kW, and the smallest body is a 33 lb tent stove.
Short answer
For a built sauna room, the smallest output we carry is the HUUM Hive Flow Mini at 8.5 kW, listed for rooms up to 494 cubic feet. For a sauna tent, the smallest is the North Shore Mini, a 33 lb stainless stove sized for a 2 person tent. Pick by your room volume, not by how compact the stove looks.
This guide compares the compact wood stoves we sell using the specifications on each product page. Prices are current list prices and can change, so check the page before you order.

Smallest in size: tent stoves
If your sauna is a tent, the North Shore Mini is the compact choice. Its legs fold, the chimney sections store inside the stove, and it has two handles for carrying. The product page notes it is built for the Mini Cube tent and may be underpowered in larger tents, where the North Shore XL is the bigger option. Use a tent stove only in a tent made for one, with the full chimney installed, a fireproof base, airflow and a battery carbon monoxide alarm, and never leave a lit stove unattended. Smallest output for a built room
The HUUM Hive Flow Mini is an 8.5 kW stove for smaller rooms where a full-size stove would overheat the space or not fit. It has a pull-out ash drawer and a glass door, and the product page lists it for rooms up to 494 cubic feet. At $3,339 it is a design-led choice rather than a budget one.
The Narvi Kuru 14 is a 13 kW stove with a glazed door, listed for rooms of 283 to 494 cubic feet, with flue connection on top or back. The Harvia M3 is 16.5 kW for rooms of 212 to 459 cubic feet, and its low starting price makes it the value pick. Notice that the Harvia lists a smaller minimum room than the Narvi even though its output is higher, so always read the room range, not just the kilowatts.
How to check a stove fits your room
Measure the interior length, width and height in feet and multiply to get cubic feet. Add allowance for glass doors, windows and tile or stone walls, which absorb heat. Then choose a stove whose listed room volume range includes your number. Our sauna heater calculator and heater sizing guide walk through the math.
Also check the practical limits: minimum ceiling height, safety distances to walls, stone capacity, maximum log length and where the flue exits. The Narvi page, for example, lists a minimum ceiling height of 79.7 inches and safety distances of 48.2 inches front to back and 36.1 inches side to side. Those clearances can decide which stove fits a small room before output does.
Small stove or electric heater?
If a wood stove feels like too much for a small space, an electric heater is the other route and needs only the right circuit. Our electric or wood-burning comparison covers the trade-offs, and best sauna heaters shows both types by use case. If you do choose wood, read how to maintain a wood-burning sauna before you buy.
A buying checklist for a small wood stove
Before you order, run through the same short list for any stove. First, confirm the stove's listed room volume range includes your cubic feet, including the minimum, because a stove sized for a much larger room can overheat a small cabin. Second, check the clearances to walls and benches in the manual against your floor plan, since a compact room often has less spare space than the stove needs. Third, look at the ceiling height, as some stoves list a minimum. Fourth, decide how you will vent it: every wood stove needs a chimney or flue installed to the manufacturer instructions, and in many places a permit or inspection applies, so check local rules and hire a qualified installer where required.
Fifth, think about stones and wood. The Narvi Kuru 14 lists a stone capacity of 77 lb of 4 to 6 inch stones, sold separately, and firewood up to 13 inches long. The Harvia M3 includes its stones and holds up to 66 lb. The tent stove takes 30 to 40 lb of stones in a rock basket, also sold separately, and logs up to 14 inches long. Stones store heat and give softer steam, so budget for them if they are not included.
What to expect from a compact stove
A compact stove is a good fit when your room is small, when you want to keep the heater footprint low, or when you are building a cabin or backyard room off the electrical grid. Because the output is lower, it is more important that the room is well insulated and that glass and doors are kept to what you need. The manufacturer room volume ranges are the guide, and they assume a sauna built to normal standards. If you are somewhere between two sizes, ask us before you order and we will help you read the chart.
Whatever you choose, treat a wood stove as a fire appliance. Keep combustibles clear to the distances in the manual, install a carbon monoxide alarm, keep the stove supervised while it is lit, and never use a tent stove in anything but a tent made for one.

Frequently asked questions
What is the smallest wood stove for a sauna?
Of the stoves we sell, the smallest by output is the HUUM Hive Flow Mini at 8.5 kW, and the smallest in physical size is the North Shore Mini tent stove, which is built for a 2 person tent rather than a built room.
Can a small wood stove heat a sauna room?
Yes, if its rated room volume covers your room. Measure length by width by height in cubic feet, add allowance for glass and uninsulated walls, and choose a stove whose listed range includes that number.
Is it better to undersize or oversize a sauna stove?
Neither. An undersized stove struggles to reach temperature and an oversized one can overshoot. Match the manufacturer room volume range as closely as you can.
Do small wood stoves need a chimney?
Yes. Every wood stove needs a proper chimney or flue installed to the manufacturer instructions, with the clearances in its manual. Tent stoves ship with their own chimney sections and must be used only in a tent made for a stove.
