Put the sauna on a level, well drained pad that extends about a foot past the cabin on every side, and keep 2 to 3 feet of open space around the walls so you can maintain the wood and let air move. Sit it 8 to 15 feet from the house for an easy winter walk without crowding the structure, and confirm your local setback from property lines, which often runs 3 to 10 feet. Keep the door out of the prevailing wind and away from where snow slides off a roof. Plan the power before the pad goes in, because an electric heater needs its own 240 volt circuit and a licensed electrician. How the planner works

Clearances, setbacks, and the paperwork
Two different rules are at play, and buyers often mix them up. Clearance is what the sauna needs to function: air on all sides, no overhanging branches dropping sap and needles on the roof, a door that opens fully, and room to walk around it with a hose or a stain brush. Setback is what your city requires between an accessory structure and your property line, and it is set by local zoning rather than by the manufacturer.
- Sides and rear: 2 to 3 feet of open space, more if you plan to stain the exterior yourself.
- Overhead: keep the roof clear of branches and of anything that sheds snow onto it.
