FDA cleared, FDA registered, and what neither one promises
These three phrases get used interchangeably in listings, and only one of them means a regulator looked at the device.
- FDA registered means the manufacturer told the FDA where it makes products. It is an administrative listing. Nobody reviewed the device.
- FDA cleared means the device went through 510(k) premarket notification for a specific use and was found substantially equivalent to a device already on the market. A seller making this claim should be able to give you a K number you can look up.
- FDA approved is a higher bar used for higher risk products, and it does not apply to consumer red light panels. A listing using that phrase is either careless or misleading.
