The short answer: what size steam generator do I need?
Size a residential steam generator by adjusted cubic feet, not by raw room size. Multiply length by width by ceiling height to get raw cubic feet, then apply a multiplier for the wall material, the ceiling height, exterior wall exposure, and any glass. Ceramic or porcelain tile is roughly 1.35 times, glass block is about the same, and natural stone or marble runs about 2.0 times because dense surfaces pull heat out of the room. A 9 foot ceiling adds about 15 percent and a 10 foot ceiling about 30 percent. One exterior wall adds roughly 10 percent, two adds about 20 percent. Match the adjusted number to a generator rated at or above it. Most home steam rooms land between 6 kW and 15 kW. A tiled 5 by 4 by 8 foot enclosure with no exterior walls works out near 216 adjusted cubic feet, which points to a 15 kW unit.
How the calculator works
The tool follows the same adjusted cubic feet method that residential steam generator manufacturers publish in their sizing charts. It runs four steps.
- Raw volume. Length times width times ceiling height, in feet.
- Material factor. Acrylic enclosures stay at 1.0. Ceramic tile, porcelain, and glass block sit near 1.35. Natural stone, marble, and poured concrete jump to 2.0 because they act as a heat sink.
- Envelope factors. Ceiling height above 8 feet, exterior wall exposure, and large glass surfaces each add load, because each one bleeds heat or gives steam more room to climb.
- Generator match. The adjusted figure is matched to the next standard residential size at or above it, then converted to amp draw at 240 volts so you can check it against your electrical panel.
The running cost line assumes the element cycles rather than firing continuously once the room is up to temperature, so it applies a duty factor of about 70 percent across the session. Breaker sizes shown are the values manufacturers commonly spec, because a steam generator is treated as a continuous load and the circuit is rated above the running draw. Treat them as a planning guide and confirm the exact breaker and wire gauge against the model you buy. Larger units are often split across two circuits.
Five sizing mistakes that cost people money
- Sizing on raw cubic feet. Skipping the material multiplier is the single most common error. A stone room needs roughly double the generator of the same room in acrylic.
- Forgetting the ceiling. Going from 8 feet to 10 feet adds about 30 percent to the load for the same floor plan. Keeping the ceiling at 8 feet is the cheapest way to shrink the generator you need.
- Leaving the enclosure leaky. A vapor sealed door, a sloped ceiling that sheds condensation, and no bathroom vent inside the enclosure all matter. A room that leaks steam behaves like a much larger room.
- Checking the panel last. A 15 kW unit wants a dedicated 240 volt circuit at 80 amps. If your panel is already near capacity, that cost lands after you have already bought the generator.
- Rounding down. When the adjusted number sits between two sizes, take the larger one. An undersized generator runs constantly, never holds temperature, and wears out sooner.

The generator sits outside the steam room in a dry, accessible spot within about 25 feet of the steam head, such as a vanity cabinet, a closet, a basement ceiling bay, or an attic in a warm climate. It needs a water supply, a drain, and access for annual flushing, so a sealed wall cavity is not a workable location.
