Do sauna heaters need GFCI protection?

This one has a real catch, so read it carefully. Recent code cycles push ground-fault protection for electrical equipment in damp, high-humidity spaces, and a sauna qualifies. At the same time, hardwired 240V traditional heaters are known to nuisance-trip GFCI breakers, because the heating elements absorb ambient moisture and leak a small, harmless amount of current to ground at startup.
