ThermaSol ThermaTouch 7 steam shower control package with round steam head and controller

Steam Shower Generator Electrical Requirements Explained

A steam shower generator needs its own dedicated circuit, sized to the model's kW rating and installed by a licensed electrician. The ThermaSol generators on our pages run from 6 kW to 24 kW for homes. Have your electrician size the breaker and wire from the manufacturer's manual for your exact model, not from a rule of thumb.

The power question comes after the size question. Start by sizing the unit to your steam room, then plan the circuit. Our steam shower generators collection lists every generator and control package we carry. We sell these ThermaSol products, so we have a stake here. This article gives you the questions to bring to an electrician. It is not wiring instructions, and every electrical detail below should be confirmed in the ThermaSol installation manual for your model and with your local code.

How many kW does a steam shower generator use?

The kW rating is on every product page, and it is the number your electrician needs first. Steam rooms with more volume, or with tile, glass and stone that absorb heat, need a larger generator.

Generator Output options Listed sizing Listed price
ThermaSol Pro Series I Essential 11 kW (PROI-395) 241 to 395 adjusted cu ft $4,399.97
ThermaSol Pro Series II Advanced 8, 10, 11, 15, 20 or 24 kW Send us your shower dimensions $3,799.97 to $6,999.97
ThermaSol Pro Series III Ultimate 6, 8, 10, 11, 15, 20 or 24 kW Send us your shower dimensions $4,499.97 to $8,299.79
ThermaSol Day Spa (commercial) 10, 12, 16 or 20 kW, for 2 to 4 rooms Up to 600, 1,000, 1,600 or 2,600 cu ft combined From $3,699.97

Prices change by output and options, so confirm them on each page. Our steam generator size calculator helps you estimate the volume and the kW class before you talk to anyone about wiring.

How does kW turn into amps?

Watts divided by volts gives amps. As general arithmetic, a 10 kW generator is 10,000 watts, and on a 240 volt supply that is about 42 amps of load. A 24 kW unit on the same supply is about 100 amps. Those numbers show scale, not a design. Your electrician applies code rules for continuous loads, wire gauge, run length and breaker size, and the ThermaSol manual states the electrical data for each model.

The takeaway is that the larger models are a serious electrical project. A 24 kW generator can need a big dedicated feed, and it may force a panel upgrade in an older house. If your panel is already full, say so at the first conversation. Our guide on what it costs to turn a shower into a steam shower covers where electrical work fits in the total budget.

What should you ask the electrician?

  • Which model and kW? Give the exact model number, such as PROII-0395, so the quote is for the right load.
  • What voltage and phase does the manual call for? Do not assume. Read it from the manual for your model together.
  • Is there room in the panel? Ask for the available capacity and whether a subpanel or upgrade is needed.
  • How far is the generator from the panel? Longer runs can change wire size.
  • Where will the generator sit? Our pages say the generators can be installed up to 50 feet from the shower, which gives you room to choose a spot. Keep it dry and serviceable, and follow the manual for clearances.
  • Will you pull the permit? Many areas require a permit and inspection for a new dedicated circuit.

Plumbing is the other half of the install. The generator needs a water supply and a drain for its pan, and the steam room needs a sealed enclosure. Read our steam shower installation guide before you finalize plans.

Some hardware also affects the plumber and the electrician. Our Pro Series II and III pages list a PowerFlush system that uses pressurized water to clear sediment, and the Pro Series III page lists a pre-plumbed safety relief valve and a stainless steel drain pan as included. Ask whoever plumbs the unit how they plan to pipe the relief valve and the drain, so the electrical and plumbing plans do not collide in the same small space.

Do the controls need power too?

The controls ride on low-voltage communication from the generator. Our pages say the Pro Series generators use two-way digital CAN-bus to link to ThermaSol controls, and the Pro Series I works with ThermaTouch, SignaTouch, the Serenity Light and Music Series and HydroVive. Packages like the ThermaTouch 7-inch round wellness steam package bundle the control and steam head, so you buy the control side once. Whatever you choose, ask the electrician to confirm the control wiring path in the manual.

Which generator should you price first?

If your steam room is modest, the 11 kW Pro Series I is the entry model listed for up to 395 adjusted cubic feet. If you want a wider range of outputs, compare the Pro Series II and III in our Pro Series I vs II vs III comparison, and read the different types of steam generators if you are still deciding what to buy. For the lifestyle side of the decision, see the pros and cons of a steam shower. For a spa or hotel with several rooms, the Day Spa series is the commercial option, and our business program page is the place to start.

We have no owner reviews of these generators on our store yet, so this guide rests on the manufacturer specs listed on our pages. Not sure which output fits? Send us your steam room dimensions and we will help you size it before you call an electrician.

Frequently asked questions

Does a steam shower generator need a dedicated circuit?

Plan for one. A generator is a high-load appliance, so have a licensed electrician size a dedicated circuit from the manufacturer manual for your exact model.

How many kW is a steam shower generator?

The ThermaSol generators on our pages range from 6 kW to 24 kW for homes, and 10 to 20 kW for the commercial Day Spa series. The right size depends on your steam room volume and surfaces.

Can I install a steam generator myself?

The wiring should be done by a licensed electrician and inspected where required. Plumbing and enclosure details are in the manufacturer manual and our installation guide.

How far can the generator be from the shower?

Our ThermaSol product pages say the Pro Series generators and the Day Spa series can be installed up to 50 feet from the shower or steam room.

Will I need a panel upgrade?

It depends on the generator size and the spare capacity in your panel. Ask your electrician to check available capacity before you order.
