The short answer
Most outdoor saunas sit on one of four foundations: a compacted gravel pad, a poured concrete slab, a paver patio, or deck blocks with treated beams. Whichever you pick, size the pad 6 to 12 inches larger than the sauna on every side so water drains away from the walls instead of pooling against them. A gravel pad wants 4 to 6 inches of compacted crushed stone. A slab is usually 4 inches thick for a kit under about 2,500 pounds and 6 inches for anything heavier, poured over 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel base. How this sauna foundation calculator works
You give it three things: the footprint of the sauna, how far you want the pad to extend past the walls, and the foundation type. From there the math is straightforward.
- Pad size. Your sauna length and width, plus twice the overhang on each dimension. A 6 ft x 7 ft barrel with a 12 inch overhang needs an 8 ft x 9 ft pad, or 72 square feet.
- Gravel. Pad area times depth, converted to cubic yards, then to tons at roughly 1.4 tons per cubic yard for crushed stone. Order about 10 percent extra, because compacting 6 inches of loose stone gives you closer to 5.
- Concrete. Pad area times slab thickness in cubic yards, plus the 4 inch gravel base underneath. The calculator also shows the equivalent count of 80 pound bags, so you can compare mixing it yourself against a ready mix delivery.
- Pavers. Pad area divided by paver area, plus a 10 percent cutting and breakage allowance, over a 4 inch compacted base.
- Deck blocks. Blocks spaced no more than 4 feet apart under treated beams, which is the usual limit before a 4x6 beam starts to sag under a loaded sauna.
- Load check. Sauna dry weight, plus 200 pounds per person, plus a heater and stone allowance, divided by pad area. Anything under about 100 pounds per square foot is comfortable for a properly compacted pad.
Which sauna foundation should you choose?
There is no single right answer. Gravel is the default for a reason, but the ground you have and how permanent you want the sauna to be both matter. This table shows the tradeoffs.

What the numbers mean for your site
Two results deserve a second look before you order anything.
Load per square foot. A 1,200 pound sauna with two people in it is only about 22 pounds per square foot spread across a 72 square foot pad, which is nothing for compacted stone or a slab. The number matters more on a deck, a balcony, or a rooftop, where residential framing is typically designed around 40 pounds per square foot of live load. Frost. A free standing sauna on a floating gravel pad or a floating slab can move a little with the ground and settle back, which is why most kits ship with floating pad instructions. Permanent footings and piers are different. The International Residential Code requires exterior footings to sit at least 12 inches below undisturbed ground and below the local frost line, and your building department sets that depth. Keep the wood dry. Whatever you build, the point is drainage. USDA Forest Products Laboratory research on protecting wood buildings from decay puts the safe threshold around 20 percent moisture content, and wood that sits on damp ground stays well above that. Slope the finished grade away from the pad, keep the sauna base off standing water on skids or blocks, and your cedar or thermowood lasts a lot longer.
Before you order materials
- Call 811 a few days ahead so utilities get marked. It is free and it is the law in most states.
- Confirm the exact footprint from the manufacturer drawing, not the marketing page. Barrel cradles and porch overhangs change the pad size.
- Level to within about a quarter inch across the pad. Doors and glass panels on a sauna are unforgiving about twist.

- Order gravel by the ton and concrete by the cubic yard, and add 10 percent. Coming up short mid pour costs more than the extra material.
Frequently asked questions
How thick should a sauna concrete pad be?
Four inches of concrete is the usual minimum for a sauna kit under about 2,500 pounds, poured over 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel. Go to 6 inches for heavier cabins, wet rooms with a floor drain, or soft soil. Reinforce the pour with wire mesh or rebar to limit cracking, and extend the pad 6 to 12 inches past the sauna walls on every side.
Can you put an outdoor sauna on a gravel pad?
Yes. A compacted gravel pad 4 to 6 inches deep is the most common outdoor sauna foundation because it drains well, costs less than concrete, and needs no cure time. Keep the pad level to within about a quarter inch, edge it so the stone stays put, and set the sauna on treated skids or blocks so the wood never sits in standing water.
Does a sauna foundation need to go below the frost line?
A free standing sauna on a floating gravel pad or slab usually does not need frost footings, because it can move slightly with the ground and settle back. Permanent footings, piers, and anything your building department treats as a permanent structure do need to reach below the local frost depth. Check with your city before you pour, since the requirement is set locally.
