Fire safety and clearances on a wood deck
Weight is the first problem. Heat is the second. Every sauna heater has manufacturer clearance requirements to combustible surfaces, and a wood deck is combustible on every side of the unit.
- Electric and infrared heaters are the simpler case. Follow the listed clearances, keep the unit level, and use the required dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician.
- Wood burning stoves need a non-combustible floor protector under and in front of the stove, correct chimney clearance to combustibles, a proper roof or wall pass through, and a spark arrestor.
