Liberty Spas LYS5000 six-person hot tub with white shell and brown cabinet, angled view

Can you run a hot tub off a 100 amp panel?

Often yes, but the 100 amp rating alone does not decide it. What matters is how much of that capacity your home already uses. The Liberty Spas LYS5000, LYS6000 and LYS7000 each need a dedicated 240V, 50A GFCI-protected circuit installed by a licensed electrician, who should run a load calculation on your panel before you order.

We sell these models in our hot tubs collection, and we are an authorized dealer for Liberty Spas. Everything below comes from the Liberty product pages. We are not electricians and this is not wiring advice: it tells you what to ask, so the quote you get is for the right job.

What does a 100 amp panel rating actually tell you?

The 100 amps is the size of your service, the total your home can draw through that panel. Every circuit in the house shares it: the range, the dryer, the air conditioner, the water heater, the lights and the outlets. A hot tub circuit is one more branch on the same panel.

On paper, a 50 amp circuit is half of a 100 amp service rating, which is why the answer is not automatic. Most of your other loads do not run at once, and electricians account for that with a load calculation. That calculation is the real test. If your home has gas heating, gas cooking and a gas water heater, the answer is often easier than in an all-electric home with central air and an electric dryer.

So the useful question is not "is my panel 100 amps?" but "how much spare capacity does this panel have for a 240V, 50A circuit?" Only an electrician who can open the panel and look at the loads can answer it.

What electrical does each Liberty hot tub need?

Here is what the Liberty product pages list for the five models we carry. The first two plug into a regular outlet, the other three need a 240V circuit.

Model Seats Electrical Heater Price
LYS4000 4 120V, 15A, field-convertible to 240V 1.5 kW $6,000
LYS4500 Up to 6 120V, 15A (plug and play) 1.5 kW $5,500
LYS5000 6 240V, 50A 5.5 kW $6,500
LYS6000 6 240V, 50A 5.5 kW $7,499
LYS7000 7 240V, 50A 5.5 kW $7,499

Prices change, so confirm them on the product page before you order. The three 240V models list a dedicated, GFCI-protected circuit installed by a licensed electrician. The LYS4000 and LYS4500 list a dedicated 120V, 15A outlet on a GFCI-protected circuit.

What if your panel is tight?

You have a few honest options, and the right one depends on what the electrician finds.

Choose a plug and play model. The LYS4500 and LYS4000 run on 120V, 15A, so there is no new 240V circuit to fit into the panel. The trade-off is a smaller 1.5 kW heater instead of 5.5 kW. Our guide to plug and play hot tubs, 120V vs 240V explains what that means for heat-up and winter use.

Start on 120V and convert later. The LYS4000 page says it can be field-converted to 240V without upgrades, and that the conversion should be done by a licensed electrician. That gives a tight panel a path forward.

Ask about upgrading or adding a subpanel. If your heart is set on a 240V model and the load calculation says no, the electrician can tell you whether a service upgrade or a subpanel is the fix. We do not quote those costs because they vary by home and by local code.

What should you ask the electrician?

  • Can my panel take a new dedicated 240V, 50A circuit after a load calculation?
  • Does the circuit need to be GFCI-protected, and where does the disconnect go?
  • How far is the run from the panel to the spot where the tub will sit?
  • Will local code or an inspection require anything else?

Bring the model's electrical line from the product page, so the quote matches the tub you are buying. If you are unsure which model fits, send us your panel details and we will help you compare, but the final call belongs to a licensed electrician.

What else should you check before you order?

Electrical is only one of the site-readiness items. The Liberty pages also list these:

  • Base. Liberty recommends a flat, level base that supports at least 150 lb per square foot, such as a 4 to 6 inch poured concrete pad, in full contact with the bottom of the spa.
  • Weight. The LYS5000 is listed at 850 lb dry and 3,280 lb filled. The LYS7000 is listed at 900 lb dry and 3,500 lb filled.
  • Delivery. Free curbside (tailgate) delivery in the contiguous U.S. The carrier calls to schedule. Curbside means the spa is set down at the curb or driveway, so plan help or equipment to move it to its pad.
  • Final sale. Liberty Spas hot tubs cannot be returned or exchanged once ordered, so check size, electrical needs and the access path first.

For sizing and price context, see what size hot tub you need and how much a hot tub costs. If you are choosing between the two largest models, our LYS6000 vs LYS7000 comparison covers the differences, and the best hot tub for home guide compares the full lineup.

What mistakes do buyers make with hot tub electrical?

The most common one is ordering first and calling an electrician second. Because Liberty hot tubs are final sale, a tub that arrives before the circuit question is settled can sit in the driveway for weeks, so get the electrical answer first.

The second is sizing the wire and breaker from a forum post instead of the product page. The numbers that count are the ones for your exact model: 240V, 50A for the LYS5000, LYS6000 and LYS7000, and 120V, 15A for the LYS4500 and LYS4000. Hand those lines to the electrician as written.

The third is forgetting the distance. A long run from the panel to the pad changes the job, and an outdoor location may need a disconnect and weather-rated work. Measure the path and tell the electrician where the tub will sit, so the quote reflects the whole run and not just the breaker.

Finally, do not assume that a 100 amp panel is the problem. Plenty of homes with 100 amp service have room for a hot tub circuit, and some larger panels do not. Get the load calculation and decide from there.

How do you choose?

If your panel has room and you want the full 5.5 kW heater, the LYS5000, LYS6000 and LYS7000 are built for a dedicated 240V, 50A circuit. If the panel is tight or you want to avoid new wiring, the LYS4500 and LYS4000 plug into a standard outlet. Browse the Liberty Spas collection to compare seats, jets and prices side by side.

We have no customer reviews on these hot tubs yet, so this guide is based on the manufacturer specs and Liberty's own setup notes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you run a hot tub off a 100 amp panel?

Often yes, but it depends on how much spare capacity the panel has after your other loads, not on the 100 amp rating alone. A licensed electrician should run a load calculation before you order a 240V, 50A hot tub.

What size breaker does a Liberty Spas hot tub need?

The LYS5000, LYS6000 and LYS7000 list a dedicated 240V, 50A GFCI-protected circuit installed by a licensed electrician. The LYS4500 and LYS4000 list a dedicated 120V, 15A outlet on a GFCI-protected circuit.

Can a hot tub run without a 240V circuit?

Two of our Liberty models can. The LYS4500 and LYS4000 are plug and play on 120V, 15A, with a 1.5 kW heater. The LYS4000 can also be converted to 240V by a licensed electrician.

Do I need a licensed electrician to install a hot tub circuit?

Yes. The Liberty pages say the 240V models require a circuit installed by a licensed electrician, and that converting the LYS4000 to 240V should be done by one.

What else do I need to prepare before delivery?

A flat, level base that supports at least 150 lb per square foot, such as a 4 to 6 inch poured concrete pad, plus a clear path for curbside delivery. Liberty hot tubs are final sale, so check size, electrical and access first.
