  • Small chiller, insulated tub, 3 to 6 amps. Usually fine sharing a lightly loaded circuit, though a dedicated circuit is still the safer choice.
  • Mid size all in one units, 8 to 12 amps. Most manufacturers specify a dedicated 15 amp circuit.
  • Large or commercial style units, 12 to 15 amps or more. A dedicated 20 amp circuit, and occasionally a 240 volt circuit on the largest models.

The failure mode is predictable. A chiller sharing a circuit with a garage freezer, a shop vacuum, or a space heater will trip the breaker at the worst moment, usually overnight, and you wake up to a warm tub. Repeated nuisance trips also stress the compressor. Several manufacturers state plainly that running the unit on an undersized or shared circuit voids the compressor warranty, which is the most expensive part of the machine. Does a cold plunge need a GFCI outlet?

Yes, in practice always. A ground fault circuit interrupter compares the current going out to the current coming back and cuts power when the difference reaches about 5 milliamps, fast enough to prevent a fatal shock. Can you use an extension cord with a cold plunge?

No, and this is the most common mistake we see people make. A compressor pulls high current continuously, and a typical 16 gauge household extension cord drops voltage across its length. Low voltage makes the compressor work harder, run hotter, and fail early. Most manufacturers void coverage outright if the unit is run on an extension cord.

If the outlet is not where the tub is, the correct fix is to move the outlet, not to bridge the gap with a cord. Who needs an electrician, and who does not

You probably do not need an electrician if: your unit draws under about 10 amps, the outlet you plan to use is already GFCI protected, it is on a circuit with nothing else meaningful on it, and the tub sits indoors within the cord length.

You should hire one if: the manufacturer specifies a dedicated circuit and you do not have one, the tub is going outdoors or on a deck, the nearest outlet is not GFCI protected, your panel is older than roughly 1990, or the unit needs 240 volts.
