How to choose an electric sauna heater
1. Size the kW to the room
Heater output must match the room volume, with extra for glass, stone or uninsulated walls. Too small and the room never gets hot; too large and it overshoots. Use our sauna heater calculator or read what size sauna heater do I need.
2. Controls
- Built-in controls: dials on the heater, simple and lower cost (for example Harvia The Wall and Cilindro PC).
- Separate controller: a wall panel such as the Harvia Xenio or HUUM UKU, with timers and on some models WiFi.
3. Style and mounting
Wall-mount heaters save floor space; floor-standing and pillar heaters hold more stones for softer steam. Compare in Harvia heaters compared and which HUUM heater to buy.
4. Electrical and installation
Most electric sauna heaters run on a dedicated 240V circuit and must be installed by a licensed electrician to the clearances in the manual. Read do you need a special outlet for a sauna heater? and the clearance guide.

Electric Sauna Heaters FAQ
What size electric sauna heater do I need?
Size the heater to your room volume in cubic feet: multiply length, width and height. Add capacity for glass doors, windows or uninsulated walls. Each listing shows the room volume range for every output option, and our electric heaters run from about 3 kW for small rooms to 20 kW for large ones.
What circuit does an electric sauna heater need?
Most electric sauna heaters for homes run on a dedicated 240V circuit, with the breaker and wire sized to the heater's amperage. Larger heaters may need a separate power unit or contactor. Have a licensed electrician confirm your panel has room before you order; our breaker size calculator gives a first estimate.
Can I install an electric sauna heater myself?
You can usually mount the heater and stack the stones yourself, but the wiring should be done by a licensed electrician, and some warranties require it. The electrician sizes the breaker and wire to the heater and checks the clearances to walls, benches and ceiling listed in the manual.
Built-in controls or a separate control panel?
Built-in controls sit on the heater and keep the install simple. A separate control, such as Harvia Xenio or the HUUM UKU, mounts outside the hot room and adds timers, and some versions add WiFi so you can preheat from your phone. Each listing says which control is included.
How long does an electric sauna take to heat up?
Heat-up time depends on room size, insulation, heater output and the starting temperature. A well-insulated indoor room with a correctly sized heater heats much faster than a cold outdoor room in winter. Our heat-up time calculator gives an estimate for your room and heater.
