Best Sauna Heaters for Home Saunas (2026): Electric and Wood Picks
Share
The best sauna heater is the one sized to your room and matched to the way you want to use the sauna. For most home rooms that means an electric heater between 4.5 and 9 kW on a dedicated 240V circuit, chosen from the manufacturer sizing chart. If you want fire, no electrical run, or an off-grid cabin, a wood-burning stove rated for your room volume is the better fit.
Below are our picks by use case, all from heaters we sell, with the room volumes the manufacturers list for each size. Prices are current list prices on Restore Suite and can change, so check the product page before you buy.

How to size a sauna heater
Size by the air volume of the room, not the floor area. Multiply interior length by width by height in feet to get cubic feet, then pick the smallest heater whose rated room volume covers it. As a rough guide, the manufacturer charts for the heaters below work out to about 1 kW for every 45 to 65 cubic feet of a well-insulated room. For example, Harvia lists the 4.5 kW KIP for rooms up to 210 cubic feet and the 6 kW size for up to 300.
Glass doors, windows, stone or tile walls and poorly insulated walls all absorb heat, so manufacturers ask you to add volume for them before you choose. An undersized heater runs constantly and struggles to reach temperature; an oversized one can overshoot and cycle hard. Our sauna heater calculator and heater sizing guide do the math for you.

Electric vs wood-burning: which is better?
Electric heaters win on convenience: they reach temperature with a button or an app, hold a steady setpoint, and need only the right circuit. Wood stoves win on atmosphere and independence: no electrical service, the sound and smell of a real fire, and a natural fit for off-grid cabins and backyard barrels. They need a chimney, clearances to combustibles that follow the manual, and a little more time and attention. Our electric or wood-burning guide goes deeper.
Power, installation and controls
Most electric sauna heaters for home rooms are hardwired to a dedicated 240V circuit, and the breaker and wire size depend on the heater output. Plan the circuit with a licensed electrician before the heater arrives; our sauna breaker size calculator and special outlet guide explain what to ask for. Wood stoves need a properly installed chimney and the clearances in the manufacturer manual.
Controls matter more than most buyers expect. Built-in dials are simple and reliable. A wall control such as Harvia Xenio or the HUUM UKU adds a timer and a precise setpoint, and WiFi versions let you preheat from your phone.
