Huum Drop wall-mounted sauna heater with a rounded stone cage

Is huum or harvia better?

Neither brand wins for every sauna. Harvia suits you if you want lower entry prices, UL-listed electric models and WiFi control included, starting with the KIP at $1,998. Huum suits you if you want a design-led wall heater or one that tucks into a bench. Match kW to your room volume first.

Both brands are on our sauna heaters shelf: see the full Harvia collection and the Huum collection. We sell both brands, so we have a stake in this answer. Specs and prices below come from our product pages, and anything the pages do not state is left out.

What is the real difference between Huum and Harvia?

Harvia is the broader line. Our catalog lists Harvia electric heaters such as the KIP, Spirit, Virta, Cilindro and The Wall, plus a long list of wood stoves, and our pages list the KIP, Spirit and Virta as made in Finland. Huum is a smaller line with a design focus. Our Huum pages cover the Drop wall heater, the Core Thermo-Aspen and the Hive wood-burning stoves, and list the Core as made in Estonia.

In practice, the choice comes down to four things: how you want the heater to look, what controller you want, how big your room is, and what you want to spend.

How do the electric models compare?

Model Outputs Listed room volume Control Listed price
Harvia KIP 3, 4.5, 6 or 8 kW 130 to 425 cu ft Xenio CX170 panel and WiFi module included $1,998 to $2,148
Harvia Spirit 6, 8 or 9 kW Check the page for each size Xenio panel and WiFi remote included $3,096 to $3,630
Harvia Virta HL E 6, 8, 9 or 10.5 kW 297 to 635 cu ft Xenio panel and WiFi remote included $3,167 to $4,267
Huum Drop 4.5, 6, 7.5 or 9 kW 247 to 530 cu ft UKU controller included, WiFi optional $2,716 to $3,133
Huum Core Thermo-Aspen 6.5, 9 or 10.5 kW 177 to 566 cu ft UKU control sold separately $3,236 to $3,517

Prices change and vary by output, so confirm them on each product page.

When does Harvia make more sense?

Choose Harvia if budget matters. The KIP is the lowest-priced electric heater in this comparison and ships with the Xenio CX170 panel, the WiFi module for the MyHarvia app and stones in the box. Our page lists it as UL listed, with sizes for small to medium rooms.

Choose Harvia if your room is large. The Virta HL E tops out at 10.5 kW and is listed for rooms up to 635 cubic feet, with control and WiFi included. For a pillar-style heater, see our Harvia Cilindro comparison, and for the wider Harvia range read Harvia sauna heaters compared.

When does Huum make more sense?

Choose Huum if the heater is part of the look. The Drop is a rounded, wall-mounted heater with stones wrapped around the element. Our page lists 122 lb of stone capacity and the UKU digital controller in the box. The Core Thermo-Aspen wears thermo-aspen wood panels that match the room and lists small safety distances, including a built-in bench placement.

Choose Huum if you want a wood stove with a modern shape. The Hive Flow and Hive Wood stoves are in the Huum collection. If you are weighing several Huum models, our guide on which Huum sauna heater to buy goes model by model.

Which one gives better steam?

Steam comes from stone mass and how the water meets the stones. The Huum Drop lists 122 lb of stones wrapped around the element, and its page says more stone mass lets you add more water before the stones cool. The Harvia Spirit and Virta list large stone capacity with rounded stones, and describe soft, long-lasting steam when you throw water. The KIP is the smaller option, listed for small to medium rooms, and runs dry or wet.

Because our pages give stone weight for the Drop but not for every Harvia model, we will not rank them on steam alone. If a soft, wet sauna is your priority, compare stone capacity on the exact models you are considering and read our sauna stones guide.

What should you check before deciding?

  • Room volume. Multiply length, width and height, then match the number to the listed volume for each output. Glass, stone and tile walls need more power. Try the sauna heater size calculator or read what size sauna heater you need.
  • Controller. The Harvia electric models above include a Xenio control. The Huum Drop includes UKU, while the Core needs a UKU control bought separately, so add it to your budget.
  • Stones. The Harvia KIP, Spirit and Virta HL E list stones as included. The Huum Core lists stones as sold separately.
  • Listing and local code. Our pages list the Harvia KIP, Spirit and Virta as UL listed, the Huum Drop as SGS listed and the Core as CE certified. Ask your electrician or inspector what your area accepts.
  • Electrical. Any electric heater needs a dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. See special outlets for sauna heaters and the heater guard and clearance guide.

Our sauna heater buying guide and best sauna heaters roundup cover electric against wood and how to match a heater to a cabin.

So which one should you buy?

For a standard home cabin where price and an included app matter, start with the Harvia KIP or Spirit. For a bigger room, look at the Virta HL E. If you want the heater itself to be a feature, or you want it built into a bench, start with the Huum Drop or Core. Either way, size the heater to the room before you pick the brand. We have no owner reviews of these heaters on our store yet, so this comparison rests on the specs listed on our pages. Questions about your room? Send us the dimensions and we will help you compare.
